Introduction:

The task was to create a Active Directory (AD) Group and set the ‘managedBy’ Attribute.

Using Nintex Workflow 2013 ‘Create AD Security Group’ action to create the group was easy. But how to set the managedBy Attribute?

Setting the ‘managedBy’ Attribute of Group in Active Directory properties window.

'managedBy' Attribute in AD Group Properties Window

‘managedBy’ Attribute in AD Group Properties Window

I came across with a workaround I didn’t find yet on the internet so i thought it’s worth blogging about it.

Enterprise Licence needed!

If you would like to use the Nintex AD actions you have to obtain the Enterprise Licence

Solution:

Workflow Overview – the big picture

Process: Update 'managedby' attribute

Two actions needed for setting the ‘managedBy’ attribute

Configure Action – Query User Profile

select 'Distinguished Name' and hit 'Add'

select ‘Distinguished Name’ and hit ‘Add’

store 'Distinguished Name' in Text Variable

store ‘Distinguished Name’ in Text Variable

Configure Action – Update AD User

select 'Other' and type in 'managedBy' in the Text field

select ‘Other’ and type in ‘managedBy’ in the Text field

store 'managedBy' property with previously stored Distinguished Name

store ‘managedBy’ property with previously stored Distinguished Name

Conclusion

It would have been nice if Nintex had provided a ‘Manage AD Group’ Action. But if you are familiar with the Nintex SDK you could develop your own Action for your needs.
Anyways. I think it’s cool that you can achieve this goal with no code.
